Es tebu yang segar dan manis memang paling enak diteguk pada siang hari saat cuaca sedang panas.

Namun Anda juga wajib waspada karena es tebu yang selama ini dianggap alami, ternyata mengandung bahaya yang cukup berisiko buat kesehatan.

Tebu atau Saccharum officinarum, dibudidayakan untuk membuat gula pasir, gula merah dan es tebu.

Es tebu tentu saja berasal dari penggilingan batang tanaman tebu yang kemudian dicampur dengan es segar.

Air tebu mengandung 70 hingga 75 persen air, 13 hingga 15 persen sukrosa, dan 10 hingga 15 persen serat.

Ini juga mengandung antioksidan dan komponen bermanfaat lainnya yang disebut policosanols (menurut catatan sebuah studi Juni 2015 yang diterbitkan dalam Pharmacognosy Review).

Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tebu memiliki sifat anti-inflamasi, diuretik dan penghilang rasa sakit, bersama dengan efek pengaturan gula darah dan perlindungan hati.

Namun, di balik keuntungan yang didapatkan, adapula bahaya yang mengintai jika Anda terlalu sering mengonsumsi es tebu.

Menurut Mayo Clinic, bagaimanapun es tebu adalah bahan dasar utama dari gula pasir.

Itu artinya, mengonsumsi es tebu secara rutin juga sama saja dengan Anda mengonsumsi gula pasir.

Bahaya terdekat yang mengintai adalah melonjaknya gula darah dalam tubuh. 

Untuk jangka waktu yang lama, es tebu bisa mengakibatkan diabetes hingga obesitas.
