• Hector Thompson meninggal dunia di usia 70 tahun. 
• Ia adalah seorang petinju yang namanya abadi di Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame.

SKOR.id – Kabar duka datang dari olahraga tinju Australia setelah meninggalnya Hector Thompson di Brisbane, Rabu (20/5/2020) waktu setempat.

Hector Thompson mengembuskan napas terakhir pada usia 70 tahun. Hector Thompson telah membawa tinju Negeri Kanguru diperhitungkan.

Semasa aktif sebagai petinju profesional, 1970an hingga 80an, Hector Thompson menjejaki empat kelas tanding berbeda, yakni divisi ringan, welter junior, welter, dan menengah junior.

Sepanjang kariernya, Hector Thompson juga tercatat telah melakoni 87 pertandingan dengan 73 di antaranya menghasilkan kemenangan.

Ia juga adalah seorang mantan juara tinju kelas welter junior Australia dan Pesemakmuran.

Thompson juga mencatatkan sejumlah pertandingan epik. Salah satu yang terkenal adalah saat perebutan gelar juara dunia WBA kelas ringan melawan Roberto Duran, Juni 1973.

Kala itu, Hector Thompson gagal meraih kemenangan. Namun, ia mampu membuat lawan babak belur.

Roberto Duran bahkan harus pulang dengan mata kiri bengkak dan terpaksa mendapat perawatan di rumah sakit setelah tulang rusuknya juga patah.

Lahir di Kempsey, New South Wales, pada 24 Juni 1949, Thompson dibesarkan dengan kehidupan yang keras setelah sang ibu meninggal dunia.

Thompson mulai berkarier sebagai petinju profesional saat berusia 19 tahun. Ia bertinju untuk menghidupi keluarga.

Kemudian ia memutuskan untuk pensiun pada 1980 dengan rekor 73 (27 KO)-12-2. Pada 2005, namanya pun diabadikan di Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame.

The ANBF is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Australian and Commonwealth Champion, and Australian Hall of Famer, Hector Thompson. Hector was born in Kempsie, NSW on 24th June 1949. He competed at Lightweight, Super lightweight, Welterweight and Super Welterweight during the 1970s and 80s, and amassed a record of 73(27)-12-2. He became Commonwealth (British Empire) Super Lightweight Champ in 1973 with a victory over Joe Tetteh. He earned a shot at Roberto Duran in 1973 for the WBA World lightweight. Losing by TKO. After capturing the Commonwealth title again in 1975, he mounted an unsuccessful challenge against Antonio Cervantes for the WBA World Super Lightweight title. Hector also held the Australian Super Lightweight title from 1971 to 1977, the Australian welterweight title from 1977 to 1978 and was the Australasian welterweight champion in 1973. Known to be very humble, he lived a quiet life in Brisbane in his later years. He will be fondly remembered by all Australian Boxing fans who had the pleasure of watching him. Our deepest sympathy goes to Hectors friends, family and loved ones.

Federasi Tinju Nasional Australia (ANBF) mengungkapkan kabar duka dalam akun Instagram (@anbf_boxing).

"ANBF sangat sedih mengetahui kematian juara Australia dan Persemakmuran sekaligus Australian Hall of Famer, Hector Thompson," tulis ANBF.

"Ia dikenal sangat rendah hati, dia menjalani kehidupan yang tenang di Brisbane pada saat-saatu terakhirnya.”

“Dia akan dikenang oleh semua penggemar tinju Australia. Simpati kami yang paling dalam ditujukan kepada teman , keluarga, dan orang terkasih Hector,” ANBF menuturkan.
